Course Introduction: The UK Law and FGM
The UK has developed a comprehensive legal framework to address Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), including criminalization, protective measures, mandatory reporting, and support systems for survivors. This course offers an in-depth exploration of the UK’s approach to FGM, focusing on the legal, social, and healthcare infrastructures in place to prevent the practice and safeguard vulnerable individuals.
Throughout the course, participants will review key legislation, such as the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003, and gain an understanding of the penalties and protective orders established to protect those at risk. The course will also cover mandatory reporting requirements, equipping healthcare providers, educators, and social workers with the knowledge and tools necessary for the safe and effective identification and reporting of FGM cases. Furthermore, survivors’ stories and support services will be highlighted, providing insight into the social and mental health resources available to aid recovery and help individuals rebuild their lives.
Participants will acquire practical knowledge of UK policies, learn how to implement protective measures, and understand best practices for supporting survivors and advocating against FGM within their communities. This course is essential for professionals, community leaders, and advocates dedicated to creating safer, supportive environments for all and eradicating FGM.
