Medication Administration

Medications management is a core part of the healthcare professionals role, however according to the NHS Medicines safety programme;

• there are an estimated 237 million ‘medication errors’ per year in the NHS in England, with 66 million of these potentially clinically significant
• ‘definitely avoidable’ adverse drug reactions cost £98.5 million annually, are directly responsible for approximately 700 deaths per year and contribute to an additional 1700 deaths.

It is clear then that any health worker who undertakes medications administration as part of their role in the healthcare setting must be knowledgeable about the key areas of medications safety and alert to the actions they must take when incidents occur.

Within this module we will be looking at safe practice in relation to medications administration, the legislation that covers good practise, some of the common medications administered and what actions should be taken in the event of an adverse incident.

This module does not give you the practical skills to carry out medication administration. Before administering any medication you must have completed the practical training and have been assessed as competent to administer medications.

Please take your time to complete this course. We anticipate this module will take you 40 minutes to complete. Once you have passed the accompanying assessment, you will receive a certificate of completion to be used to develop your portfolio alongside a record of your CPD credits.
