Media Mentoring

Course Description

When working as a librarian, you will often meet people without an idea of which book they should read or a website to visit. Queries come from caregivers of teenagers to those of infants. As an efficient librarian, you will recommend an appropriate app or site depending on the child’s age.

As a media mentor, your job is to ensure that your recommendation for an app or website suits the individual and their interests. Taking this course will teach you how to identify safe children’s sites that will be beneficial to the child. You will also teach parents how to monitor and control the time spent by children online. This is to prevent the child from accessing age-inappropriate websites and apps when the parent is not around.

Entry Requirements

The course is open for librarians and teachers.

Learning Requirements

Anyone in possession of a computer/laptop, a working email address, and an internet connection can take the course.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course period, the learner will:

• Have the skill to quickly identify and recommend an age appropriate app or website for children
• Quickly identify inappropriate websites and applications for children
• Know about safe social media use
• Know how to monitor children’s social media and internet use

Upon completion of the course, the learner will receive a certificate through Open Awards
