Course Overview:
The Grade 4 Mathematics course focuses on building strong foundational skills in numbers, operations, geometry, measurement, and data. Learners develop problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills through hands-on activities and real-life applications of mathematical concepts.
Key Areas of Focus:
1. Numbers and Number Operations
- Understanding place value and working with large numbers (up to 1,000).
- Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of multi-digit numbers.
- Recognizing and working with even and odd numbers.
- Introduction to fractions: basic fractions like ½, ¼, and ⅓.
2. Multiplication and Division
- Multiplication and division of numbers up to 12 × 12.
- Word problems involving multiplication and division.
- Division with remainders.
- Using multiplication tables to solve problems efficiently.
3. Geometry
- Identifying and naming basic 2D shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle) and 3D shapes (sphere, cube, cylinder).
- Understanding symmetry and lines of symmetry.
- Measuring angles and recognizing acute, obtuse, and right angles.
- Perimeter and area of simple shapes like squares and rectangles.
4. Measurement
- Understanding units of measurement (cm, m, kg, g, liters).
- Measuring length, weight, and capacity using standard units.
- Telling time: reading clocks and solving time-based problems (hours and minutes).
- Estimating and measuring temperature in degrees Celsius.
5. Data and Probability
- Collecting and organizing data using tables and charts.
- Interpreting bar graphs, pictograms, and simple line graphs.
- Understanding basic probability (likely, unlikely, certain, and impossible events).
6. Patterns and Sequences
- Recognizing and continuing number patterns (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8, …).
- Solving problems involving simple sequences and relationships.
7. Word Problems and Application
- Solving word problems related to all topics studied (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement, and geometry).
- Applying mathematics to solve everyday problems (shopping, measuring, etc.).
Practical Activities:
- Hands-on activities like measuring objects and calculating perimeter/area.
- Solving real-life word problems (e.g., shopping and budgeting).
- Using manipulatives like counters or blocks for addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
- Drawing shapes and identifying their properties.
This course ensures that learners develop practical mathematical skills, preparing them for more advanced concepts in later grades.
