Community Events
By Joshua Wright
With a diverse city and rich history, Nottingham is blessed with a vast number of exciting events. Yet, in the busyness of life, it can be hard to find out what events are on and which are worth attending. Fortunately, this blog outlines some of the entertainment, activities and support groups that Nottingham locals can attend and participate in.
Eventbrite
Eventbrite is a popular event management and ticketing website that promotes local community events. Companies, charities and other organisations routinely use the site to share details about free upcoming events in the local area. It is worth checking Eventbrite regularly to find out about the latest events and activities. Here are just a few upcoming events I found that may be of interest:
- On Saturday the 2nd of April 2022 there is a Wedding and Party fayre at Portland College. With Gaza’s Disco hire and Captain Mansfield providing free entertainment it promises to be quite the day out. If you’re planning an event or just fancy a fun morning out with the kids, this event promises to be a lot of fun.
- Between 12 pm and 5 pm on the 2nd of April, Ebony Expo will be presenting a Black Business Market in the Queens Walk Community centre. From fashion to cake stalls the market will offer a range of products from a variety of local black businesses. If you missed this event but want to hear more about upcoming Ebony Expo events use this link.
- On the 12th of April, the When Women Gather group are holding a Craft and Cuppa session at the Sherwood Community Centre on Mansfield Road. The event will be an informal opportunity to chat together, enjoy snacks and participate in a silk painting activity that will be led by Annette Waterfield. If you’re reading this after the activity has taken place you can find out about upcoming When Women Gather events using this link.
You can check out all the events and activities advertised on Eventbrite for yourself using this link.
ASKLiON
ASKLiON makes it easy to find community activities, local support groups and other events in and around Nottingham. The website is very simple to navigate, enabling you to search events by time and postcode. I’ve selected a handful of events below that Kutambua readers may be interested in but I recommend checking out the full catalogue of activities via this link.
- Every Wednesday between 1 and 3 pm, Dash Vegan host a Death Café. The event is intended to be a safe space in which people can have honest and open conversations about the subject of death and discuss making the most out of life (it should not be treated as a substitute for grief counselling or therapy). Check the website if you’re interested in booking a space.
- Nottingham Community College offers an Everyday English course for pre-entry and entry readers who want to improve their reading and writing skills. The course runs at Bestwood Community centre on a Thursday morning. You can find more details and eligibility for the course using this link.
- For those living in the Nottingham City Council area, Slimming World are offering a free 12-week weight management programme (check the website to further eligibility criteria). Unlike other dietary regimens, Slimming World’s food optimisation plan isn’t reliant on food bans and calorie counting, instead the course allows participants to eat what they term unlimited “free” foods meaning you’ll “never go hungry”. See more details on the ASKLiON page.
- Just Jamming is a music improv event that takes place on the last Tuesday of each month between 7 pm and 9:30pm in Radford Nottingham. Hosted by local jazz musician Joe Egan, the evening is an opportunity to perform and improvise together. If you want to book a place you can find more details using this link.
