Oxford-Arlan Hamilton and Earline Butler Sims Scholarship – University of Oxford
The scholarship, is available to UK undergraduates of Black African and Caribbean heritage who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme is funded by the generosity of Arlan Hamilton, an international entrepreneur assisting underrepresented business founders.
The Oxford-Arlan Hamilton & Earline Butler Sims Scholarship, named in part as a living tribute to Arlan’s mother, will provide one award for 2022 entry covering annual fees and living costs, and an internship grant to support a placement opportunity during a scholar’s course.

What does it cover?
| Duration: | 3 or 4 years depending on course length. Students undertaking a six-year medical degree would only receive funding for the first four years of the course. |
| Value: | Course fees (at the Home rate) and a grant towards living costs. An internship grant of up to £3,000 will also be available during the scholar’s course. |
| Number: | One award will be available for 2022 entry. |
How do I apply?
- You must make an application to the University of Oxford for an undergraduate course through UCAS by 15 October 2021, and be successful in gaining a place for entry in 2022.
- Details on how to apply for a scholarship for 2022 entry will be made available on this page in May 2022.
- The selection process will be undertaken in early summer 2022.
- Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in August 2022.
Further information
- Applicants will be required to have applied to the Student Finance agency in their home region (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) for an assessment of their household income and to have agreed for household income to be shared with the University of Oxford.* If an applicant is successful in their scholarship application it is their responsibility to cancel their Student Finance loan support.
- Priority will be given to applicants whose household income is assessed as £27,500 or less. Applicants with a household income of between £27,500 and £42,875 may also apply.
- Scholars will be expected to write a report at the end of their first term as well as an annual report about their academic and social activities, and achievements at the University.
- Receipt of the award in subsequent years is subject to satisfactory academic progress which will be monitored through your termly tutorial reports.
- Scholars will not be assessed to receive an Oxford Bursary or Crankstart Scholarship in addition to the Oxford-Arlan Hamilton and Earline Butler Sims Scholarship, as the living costs grant already includes an element of Oxford support.
- Any other external sources of funding may be taken into account in determining the value of the Scholarship.
*UK-resident students who are not eligible to receive government support (tuition fee loans and/or maintenance loans/grants) may apply for the scholarship if they meet all other eligibility criteria. In such a case, students would still be required to submit material allowing their household income to be assessed and should note that the maximum contribution to their course fees would be at a level equivalent to the fee rate for Home students (£9,250) in 2022/23.
